This is the KEY that unlocks all doors...

Your resume is your very first impression with a potential employer.  How you look on paper will be what gets you the interview and the chance to show them in person why you’re right for the job. Even the look of your resume can mean the difference between getting your foot in the door or being lost in the junk mail.

Not only should you have a nice looking resume, but you should have 2 or 3 resumes with different content (and possibly different designs) depending on which position you are applying for and for what type of company.  For example, the resume you send for a position at the bank will look very different than the position that you are applying for at the new hi-tech App start-up.

Don’t try and reinvent the wheel.  You’re not the first one to need a resume.  There are 100’s of websites that allow you to download resume templates – FOR FREE!  Though this seems obvious, it’s surprising how many people just don’t think of it right away.  Choose an effective and suitable template and fill-in-the-blanks so to speak.

- The length of your resume, though there are certain exceptions to this rule, should be maximum 1 page.

- The content should include only the essential and most relevant pieces of information.

-Try to limit your past employment section to 3 positions.

- Your resume should show that you are honest, hard-working, reliable, punctual, responsible, a team player, driven for success, and ready to learn new skills.  If you aren’t those things, its okay, WE’LL HELP YOU WORK ON IT!

Make sure you present yourself as a stable, consistent person.  Do not, for example, include that you’ve worked at 5 jobs in the last year.

This is a red alert to employers.

List past experience that is relevant to the position you are applying for.  Though there are always transferable skills, people aren’t trying to connect the dots between your experience as a camp counselor and the office administration position you are applying for.
